Ballina - Barundah

Barundah is the finest historical home in Ballina. It was built at the height of the timber boom in Ballina. At the time, the house dwarfed any other house in town. What’s more, it was built for love.

The house was built by the Lang family. This family has a long association with the town. In the early days of settlement, the Langs were merchants selling timber that was floated down the Richmond River. The story goes, that the young Lang son was quite taken with a local beauty. To win her love, he built Barundah to keep her happy.

It may not be the Taj Mahal, but compared to the other houses of the age it’s huge. For a start, it has two storeys. Wow. That’s big!

The current version of Barundah operates as a boutique bed and breakfast. It was fully renovated a few years back. All the original interiors were restored, along with period furniture. It’s a sign that someone is looking after the architectural heritage of the town. A few years, it was almost derelict, so seeing it back in use is a good sign for the future.
