All along the East coast of Australia, light houses were built to mark harbours, river mouths or dangerous pieces of rocks. In the local area, the Byron lighthouse has become an icon for the entire region. Not to be left out, Ballina has its own!
The building is a short, squat little building. Compared to the magnificent tall building in Byron Bay, the Ballina one is a bit of an ugly dwarf. I doubt if most people in Ballina even know that it’s there. The beach nearby is called Lighthouse beach, so that should be a bit of a sign.
The building was built in 1866 and continues to send out light every night to mark the mouth of the Richmond River. You can’t go inside or anything, but it offers some interesting views over the surrounding area.
