Mexico City – Museo Rufino Tamayo

In general, the museums of Mexico City are on amazing quality. The staff are friendly, the displays are brilliant and visiting them is a real pleasure. Not this museum though. It sucks.

Well, the inside sucks. Outside, there are a number of really cool sculptures. Inside though, is where the trouble lies. The staff has a cooler than thou attitude. Unless you have multiple piercings, a shawl or purple hair, they seem a bit annoyed that you’ve been so rude as to interrupt their day. Nasty people.

That would be OK, if the art was any good. The museum has a large collection which they rotate on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the art I saw when I was there was of the pretentious type. The type only enjoyed by other pretentious artists. I walked in and walked out five minutes later. Such a shame. On the other hand, it was really cheap. Then again, the best stuff is outside, so don’t bother going in is my advice.

The museum is located in Chapultepec Park, just near the other two museums. The building itself is quite cool and modern, nestling in amongst the trees. It’s such a shame the inside was such a letdown.
