This is the national museum of Cuban art. The building is in the centre of town, just across the way from the Revolution Museum. It is dedicated to native Cuban art and is fun to have a wander around.
The collection is housed in a purpose built building, which has a funky central courtyard and a groovy sloping ramp to link the floors. The only downside of the building, is that it’s not air conditioned. Well, bits of it are, but they don’t seem to have it turned up. This makes the whole building rather stuffy and a bit of a struggle to wander around.
The collection itself is pretty impressive. The first floor houses modern stuff. Most of this is pretty dreadful, but it’s saved by the top floor. This houses everything from colonisation to about the 1960s. This is where all the interesting stuff lives. There’s a lot of funky art going on in Cuba!
After wandering around for an hour or so, I’d seen to lot and was impressed. It would have been nice to linger a bit longer, but the stuffy hot air drove me out of there, which was a shame.
Unlike other museums, all photography was prohibited in the museum, so I can’t remember who painted all the good stuff I saw. Alas, there were no postcards or guides for sale either. Oh well. Cuban art – it’s good!
