Mexico City – Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera Y Frida Kahlo

I saved the best for last. This museum is the final residence of Frida and Diego. It was purpose built for the couple and it’s a bit weird. I think by this stage, the two had decided to live separate lived, but still wanted to be near each other. As a result the house is actually two houses. A blue one for Diego and a pink one for Frida, joined by a bridge at the top. It’s a bit funky.

Unfortunately, the people running the museum were a bit painful. They had that “cooler than thou” attitude that is apparently pretty common in Mexico City. They were very unhelpful, if not actually rude. Oh well.

Unlike the other museum, this one contains a lot more of their works and is where a lot of their good stuff was actually painted. Diego’s studio is particularly interesting. It shows how the artist worked and is a great insight to his inspirations.

The house was featured as a set in the movie “Frida”, so if you’ve seen that movie, you’ll recognise it immediately. It was great to wander around and see how the two lived. You can see Diego’s office, the bedroom where he died, as well as Frida’s bedroom and kitchen. Good stuff.

While it was a bit of a trek to get to the house, it was well worth it. I remember whilst watching “Frida” that I wanted to go see that house some day. So I did. It was fun.
