This is the next temple in the Prambanan temple complex after the main temple. Finding the temple was a bit of a struggle. I knew there were several temples in the complex, but there was not any really clear signs pointing to the other temples. It pays to be observant!
I saw the temple in the distance, so I walked down an unmarked path and walked straight into the temple. I found a sign on the way back that pointed to the temple, but it wasn't exactly obvious!
There was one other surprise on the way to the temple. There grounds are covered in well mowed lawns. Well, I thought they were mowed. As I walked along the path, I ran into a herd of deer! They were obviously the critters responsible for keeping the grass in order. A bit further on, there was a whole bunch of goats and sheep! This is not exactly what you expect to see on the grounds of a Hindu temple. They were cute, but the daddy deer had some rather fierce looking antlers, so I kind of rushed past them!
The temple itself is quite small. It's a square, with two small outside temples. It was obviously a Buddhist temple, as there were busted up Buddha statues all over it. There was one or two with heads, but most of them were headless. Some of them were so badly robbed, that all was left was a set of feet.
You are able to climb all over this temple, which was a good change from the main temple. You could literally climb and poke every poke. The view from the top wasn't bad. The highlight though, was being able to get up close and personal to the carvings. What little was left was very impressive.
This temple sits quietly between the two much larger, more impressive temples, but it was definitely worth a look, if only for all the headless Buddhas!
