There are two temples to visit on the way to Borobudur. They are teasers for the main event. They're also Buddhist temples, not nearly on the same scale, but shouldn't be missed. The first one is known as the Mendut Temple and has a nice surprise on the inside.
The first temple is a large spire, similar to the Prambanan temples. Inside, is a bit of a surprise. There are three massive Buddhas sitting inside. They're very cool, very large and very serene looking.
Next to the temple is a rather ginormous fig tree. It has huge long hanging tendrils hanging right down to the ground. They're so big and strong, that kids were actually swinging off them. It's a great combination of the man made temple and the natural tree.
Next door, is a Buddhist monastery. It's from here, every year, that the Vesak day ceremony begins. This is a ceremony to celebrate Buddha's birth. It starts here and goes by road the 3.5km to Borobudur.
As a taster for the main event, this temple is a great starter.
