Guadalajara – Plaza Tapatia

In front of the Cabañas is the Plaza Tapatia. It’s an extension of the long boulevard in the other western part of downtown. It’s a nice place to stroll, but the main distinction is all the artwork. There’s some amazing sculptures strewn across the length of the plaza.

The first sculpture is attached to the back of the theatre. It’s probably the least impressive. IT depicts some historical event in the city’s past and is a bit tame compared to the others.

The next sculpture that struck me was a massive snake head. The head is meant to be the head of the feathered serpent god. It’s massive and very curvy – what more can you ask for in a sculpture.

Right in the middle of the plaza, is a massive sculpture depicting the feathered serpent god again – Quetzalcoatl. Well, it’s the serpent and some of his friends. It’s a massive installation. It squirts nice cooling water over the area, which is a great relief from the heat.

Right in front of the Cabañas, however, is the most striking of all the sculptures. Well, there’s a set of two. On the north side of the plaza, is a series of weird sculptures. They are of people, but no-one you would recognise. They’re all distorted, twisted and have strange animal parts. There’s dudes with lobster feet and guys with long twisted arms. It’s really cool.

On the southern side, is some furniture, but not ordinary furniture. It’s bronze and it’s alive! The chairs all have people mashed into them in weird contorted poses. It’s very freakish, which is the whole charm of the place.
