#43 Tunisia

Tunisia is best described as Morocco light. It has the same handicrafts, similar food, but with a whole lot less hassle. The Tunisians are happy to have tourists, but they don't hassle you to death the same as Moroccans. It's also a massive destination for package holidays, so expect lots of German tourists hogging the best lounges. I stayed in a hotel themed to look like a cave, very odd.

There's lot of interesting places to visit. Tunis is built over the top of the old Carthage capital, with the Roman additions, so there's loads of ancient ruins. Not to be missed is the Mosaic museum. Some of the stuff in there was just amazing.

A few hours south is the rather grand Roman ampitheatre at El Jem, as seen in the first season of "The Amazing Race". Almost complete, it's an impressive site.
